Matthew Young

Matthew Young relocated to Minneapolis to join the viola section of the Minnesota Orchestra in winter of 2005. Having grown up on the Tennessee border in rural Kentucky, the winters here were something of an adjustment. Young quickly grew to love the warm artistic climate and the collaborative rapport of his colleagues onstage.

Matt studied at Yale, The Cleveland Institute of Music, and the University of Kentucky. He has been a returning faculty member of the National Orchestral Institute in College Park, Maryland.

Matt has visited many of Minnesota and Wisconsin’s public schools, viola in tow, to talk about his love for music and the great things going on at Orchestra Hall. A winner of a McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians, he has also been Grand Prize Winner in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and recipient of the Robert Vernon Prize in Viola Performance.

Featured in over 50 chamber music performances around the Twin City areas, including fundraisers for local non-profit organizations, Young has also been active outside of the Minnesota Orchestra as a teacher and performer in the Sun Valley Summer Symphony.

Matt will be on leave for the 2012-13 season as he has accepted a position as a section violist in the San Francisco Symphony.
